The chronic pain concept used in Scrambler Therapy® is in line with fundamental scientific research that led to the creation of an autonomous reference model in contrast with the Gate Control theory.
In Scrambler Therapy® chronic pain is considered an expression of the plastic phenomenon, and the time variable is connected to this aspect. In short, types of chronic pain from the time perspective, but substantially acute in their manifestations, therefore not spontaneously persistent and emerging only in relation to linear cause/effect with physiological and protective nature (typically incident pain due to mechanical causes that immediately disappears when returning to analgesic position), with Scrambler Therapy® can have only a temporary response.
This is due to the absence of the main non-linearity feature typical of real chronic pain, especially true in neuropathic pain. In these cases Scrambler Therapy® is basically a symptomatic treatment that can be used “when needed”, but will not necessarily produce medium and long term effects.
Whereas, traditional types of pain considered “difficult” or untreatable, persistent, with marked non-linearity in cause/effect relations, non-responsive to pharmacological treatment, are the most suitable to be treated by Scrambler Therapy®. By non-linearity features we mean for example manifestations such as spontaneous persistent pain, allodynia , hyperalgesia, autonomous pain, CRPS symptoms and pain memory.
In this case Scrambler Therapy® is no longer a symptomatic cure, but an effective cure, capable of bringing the pain system's response back to normal with highly successful medium-long term follow up after the treatment cycle and possibility to repeat further treatment cycles (if necessary) without treatment resistance phenomena.
Important note: Pain type treatment where there might not be pain-free areas near the treated space (such as for example Pudendal neuralgia, Trigeminal neuralgia or Phantom Limb) require an advanced training course since positioning techniques are significantly different from the standard one used in all other cases.
